A team led by Kihei’s Adam Tabura took first place in the Food Network’s “The Great Food Truck Race.” The food reality TV show’s final competition, which ended in Washington, D.C., was televised Sunday night. Tabura, an executive chef and businessman from Kihei; his brother, Lanai Tabura, a radio personality and comedian from Oahu; and friend Shawn Felipe, a comedian and actor on Oahu and in Los Angeles, made up team Aloha Plate.

Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge has reopened its visitor center, which has been closed for over two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The visitor center reopened on Monday, just in time for the National Wildlife Refuge System’s 119th birthday, according to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service news release. Hours are from 12 to 3 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, with closures on federal holidays.

Island Grocery Depot in Lahaina has extended its hours to a later closing time, the business announced Monday. The store at 58 Kupuohi St. in the Lahaina Industrial Park is now open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sunday. On Thursday mornings, instructor Natasha Joslin and the seven students in her Culinary Arts Program purchasing class, along with some campus and community volunteers, pack up 200 boxes of local produce — cabbage, sweet potatoes, bok choy, onions, eggplant, kale, bananas, tangerines and more — that are distributed later in the day to students and community members affected by the wildfires.

The Maui Lu Resort is being torn down to make way for a 388-unit, time-share development on 28 acres in north Kihei. If all goes as scheduled, the $300 million Hilton Grand Vacations Timeshare Resort will open its first of three phases in 2017, said Will Beaton, president of Capbridge Pacific, which announced in October that it had purchased the beachfront property. The redevelopment will be a “very positive change” for north Kihei, Beaton said.
